The 50 Club: half in beats out.
Every diet has a strict version and a version real people can keep. The 50 Club is the second one. These guides cover the bits that trip everybody up: drinks, snacks, eating out, everyday swaps and social life.
What the 50 Club is
Full keto too strict? Can't fast that long? Can't give up cheese? Join the club. Doing half of a good plan beats quitting the whole thing in week two. Most diet articles on Healthen have a 50 Club box that shows the half version, what comes back on the table, and what stays a no.
Two exceptions. Prescribed diets, like low FODMAP or a renal diet, get no 50 Club: half a prescription doesn't work, so that's a conversation for your doctor or dietitian. And religious and cultural eating gets no 50 Club box at all. Faith rules are not ours to water down.
The guides
Drinks
- Alcohol: what you can drink without wrecking the plan
Clear spirits and dry wine, with food, now and then. Which drinks fit, which ones wreck the plan, and why you never drink on an empty stomach.
- Soft drinks: getting off the sugar water
A can of cola is a day's sugar in two minutes, and juice is no way out. What sugary drinks do to your body, a four-week step-down to sparkling water, and why "zero" isn't our swap.
- Coffee drinks: take the syrup out
Black coffee is fine, even in your fasting window. The caramel latte, the frappé and the kopi with four spoons of sugar are desserts. A three-week plan to take the syrup out without hating your mornings.
- Energy drinks: the step-down plan
Sugar plus a big hit of caffeine, paid back with your sleep. Who should never drink energy drinks, what they do to heart and blood pressure, and a four-week taper to coffee or green tea.
Snacks
- Sweet snacks without sugar
Something in you is screaming for chocolate after dinner. Normal. What to give it instead, and the "healthy" snacks that are just sweets in a better outfit.
- Savoury snacks that don't wreck your plan
No sugar to fight, plenty of protein and fat to fill you up. The only things standing between you and a perfect snack are the salt shaker and the salami.
- Late-night snacking: what to keep in the fridge
It's 11 pm and you're standing at the open fridge again. Why it happens (short sleep, too little protein, habit), how to close the kitchen in four weeks, and what to keep in the fridge for the hard nights.
Eating out
- Fast food: the least-damage order
You're at the counter anyway. Order the protein, skip the fries and the soft drink, and keep "sometimes" to once a week. Burger chains, kebab, Würstelstand and hawker centre, sorted.
- Takeaway and delivery: best and worst picks
Delivery apps are built to sell you the extra side. Cuisine by cuisine: what to order, what to skip, and how to halve the damage without eating a sad salad on a Friday night.
Everyday swaps
- Bread: from white to the good stuff
White bread isn't poison, it just takes the slot the good stuff should have. The ladder from toast to dark rye, how to spot fake wholegrain, and why the slice goes last.
- Instant noodles and frozen pizza: upgrade, don't ban
Half the sachet, an egg and a handful of frozen vegetables. Pizza with a big salad first, never the whole thing. How to turn the emergency dinner into something closer to a meal.
Social life
- Office cake and birthdays: survive without being the weirdo
Someone's always turning 40 or leaving. Office cake never stops. When a slice fits your plan, a four-week step-down to less cake, and how to say no without giving a speech.
- Christmas, Ramadan nights and holidays: damage control
Feast days are Rebel Days, the weeks around them are not. How to enjoy Christmas, Ramadan, Deepavali and Chinese New Year, which festive foods to pick, and how to skip the January repair job.
